4 Questions to Ask Before Getting an
Oral Appliance for Sleep Apnea or Snoring

Health care can be confusing. There are often many options out there for the same solution, so which one is best for you?
We have put this guide together so you can better navigate oral appliance therapy and make sure you are finding the right provider for you.
Make sure you ask these questions before proceeding with an oral appliance for snoring or sleep apnea.

  • How many people with Obstructive Sleep Apnea or Snoring have you helped with Oral Appliance Therapy?

Treating Sleep Apnea is not covered in dental school, make sure this is a major part of what your dentist does every day. A Diplomate that is Board Certified in Dental Sleep Medicine has the best education available to help you succeed with your oral appliance.

  • How many different appliances can I choose from?

Oral Appliances are not one size fits all. Make sure your dentist has experience and knowledge of a variety of oral appliances so you can make sure they are choosing the best one for you. Some dentists only provide 1 type of appliance.

  • How will they test me for Sleep Apnea and how will I know the Oral Appliance is treating my Sleep Apnea, not just my snoring?

Both in-lab and home sleep studies must be prescribed by a physician according to the new regulations set out by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. Home sleep studies must be dispensed by a facility that is accredited to do so. Make sure your dentist has this accreditation under the Diagnostic Accreditation Program as these studies are the only way to accurately diagnose and treat Sleep Apnea.

  • Does your provider have training in TMJ issues and disorders?

It is important for the success of your treatment that your dentist has training in this field. Oral Appliances can occasionally cause issues with the TMJ, usually by aggravating something that was previously there but undiagnosed. TMJ education ensures those impacts are mitigated.
